Potassium Bromate

Potassium Bromate is usually added to bread and other flours as a maturing agent which promotes gluten development in dough, making the bread stronger and more elastic.
Bromate is also considered a category 2B carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), meaning that it may be harmful when consumed. In theory, the substance is sulpposed to bake out of bread dough as it cooks, but if too much is added, or if the bread is not cooked long enough or not at a high enough temperature, then a residual amount will remain.

Potassium Bromate has been banned from use in food products in Europe, as well as the United Kingdom in 1990, and Canada in 1994, and most other countries. It was banned in Sri Lanka in 2001 and China in 2005. It is also banned in Nigeria, Brazil and Peru.

It is not banned in the United States. But in California a warning label is required when bromated flour is used. The FDA currently permits the addition of Potassium Bromate in flour provided that its inclusion does not exceed .0075 parts for each 100 parts of weight of the flour (or 750 parts per million). http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~Ird/FCF136.html.

Potassium Bromate (KBrO3) has been used as a food additive in the treatment of flour and barley and as a constituent in cold-wave hair solution. it is also formed as a by-product during the disinfection of water by ozonation. KBrO3 is reportedly known to increase bacterial mutation and to cause renal cell tumors in rats. http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scienceforums/forum02/D-04.htm.

To avoid packaged foods that contain bromate, look for "potassium bromate" or "bromated flour" in the ingredient list. Bromated flour is likely to be found in your local pizza shop, but not in Dominos Pizza or Pizza Hut. You will find bromated flour in Arby's French Toastix and Burger King's hamburger buns. You will find it in most of your supermarket flour brands. Gold Medal flours by General Mills now also has Unbromated flour, it is stated on the front of the package.

Whole Foods Markets lists both bromated flour and potassium bromate as unacceptable ingredients for food on its website: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/unacceptable-ingredients.php.

The Doctor is IN

I recently completed my Naturopathic Doctor (ND) degree from Trinity College of Natural Health. It was a very enlighting journey. I learned things that put a lot of what goes on in the world into prespective for me. I learned why in a world of such advance technology and medical advancement, there is such an incredible amount of illness and disease. I learned that the very people that say they are here to protect you are the very people and organizations that can and most of the time do, harm you. I have learned that at the root of any illness, allergy, sickness, or disease is improper, poor and unhealthy nutrition. I have learned that the cure for any illness, sickness, allergy or disease has to have its beginnings in nutrition. Nutrition, good nutrition is the key to health and wellness. The word nutrition is far more than what we have been taught by the USDA or the FDA.

Detoxify Your Mind

Emotion: A conscious mental reaction (as anger or fear) experienced as strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body.

Looking at this definition of Emotion keep in mind what emotion is. Emotions are Energy in Motion. And what is Energy? Energy is being active. No wonder when after we experience an emotional state we feel exhausted. We are exerting energy to sustain our emotions. Some emotions require large amounts of energy such as anger and fear. And we can add even more energy to those emotions by trying to suppress or control them. I’m not suggesting that a person should not control their emotions; I’m stating that it requires energy to do it.

Everything living requires energy. Where is your energy being used? Are you always angry or upset about something? Are you frustrated with situations, people, or things in your life? All of these require massive amounts of energy from us each day, energy that could go towards healing our bodies. Yes, Energy heals.

Now lets get back to Emotions. So what do our Emotions have to do with healing our bodies? Our body is a living organ. Energy sustains life. And if we are diverting energy away from healing our bodies and exerting it into emotions that are detrimental to healing, we are literally killing ourselves with our thoughts and reactions.

Take time to detoxify your emotional (Mental) state. If things are causing you mental exhaustion, anguish, and frustration, maybe it’s time to rid yourself of it. Finding a Holistic Health and Wellness practitioner can be your first step in that direction.

What is Holistic Wellness?

Our Holistic Wellness

The question many people have asked me is, “What is Holistic Wellness?”

Holistic Wellness is the approach to life that focuses on the whole person and how they interact with their environment emphasizing the connection of mind, body, and spirit. The goal is to achieve balance and maximum well-being, where all parts (mind, body, and spirit) are functioning at the best level possible. With Holistic Wellness, by taking charge of one's own health, people accept responsibility for their own well-being by the choices they make.
